#WhyWeGive – Quilted Comfort: Lolly and Betty’s Gift to Wesley Clients

At Wesley, we are continually overwhelmed with gratitude at the quiet acts of kindness that remind us of the incredible generosity and caring within our community.

One such story comes from the thoughtful donation of two handmade quilts, lovingly created by Betty, mother of Lolly, a long-time supporter of Wesley. These quilts have found a new home in our Special Care Unit, where they now provide both warmth and comfort to our clients.

Lolly shared that quilting was more than a hobby for her mother — it was a passion and a life’s work. A gifted and award-winning quilter, Betty spent countless hours crafting each piece with careful attention and love. A large quilt, like the white one pictured, would have taken her months to complete. Every fine stitch was done by hand, a process that not only required skill but also immense patience and devotion.

“We have been blessed to have many of my mom’s quilts in our home,” Lolly shared. “But when I heard there was a need for bedding at Wesley, I knew it was time to share some of that warmth. For those of us who have comfort in abundance, it just made sense to pass that on to those who need it most.”

The quilts provide a beautiful reminder of Betty’s generosity and spirit that she brought to Wesley with each act of support. Betty’s spirit of giving was something that defined her life. Even into her later years, quilting remained a source of purpose and joy — a way to connect with others, even across time and space. Many of her creations now live with family, friends, and others who have faced difficult times. Her kindness was a constant throughout her life, inspiring all who knew her.

The connection to Wesley runs deep for Lolly as well. As a student at McMaster in the 1960s, she volunteered at Wesley’s Friday night events, taking the bus downtown each week for games and dances. “I remember getting back home around 10:30 and feeling as though it had been a worthwhile way to spend an evening,” she recalled.

Now, decades later, that same spirit of service lives on — in threads, patterns, and fabric that offer comfort that goes beyond staying warm.

Lolly continues to share Betty’s legacy, donating quilts to those in need and encouraging fellow quilters to contribute as well. And while she humbly notes that she doesn’t have her mom’s patience for hand quilting, she’s hopeful that one day she’ll return to quilting too.

We at Wesley are deeply grateful for this incredible gift — not only the quilts themselves but the story and heart behind them. Betty’s legacy is stitched into every square, and we are honoured to share it with those who need it most.
