When Ibironke Adejo arrived in Canada from Nigeria in April with her family, she was eager to begin a new chapter. Like many newcomers, she faced the challenge of settling into a new country while searching for employment.
Soon after arriving, Ibironke connected with Wesley’s Newcomer Client Support Services and was later referred to Wesley’s Employment Services team. As part of her journey, she completed 12.5 hours of Wesley’s Newcomer Workshops, which helped her better understand the Canadian workplace, job search strategies, and available community resources. The following week, she began the 30-hour Fedcap Power of Possible (POP) workshop series.
The results came quickly. While attending the POP workshops, Ibironke secured employment as a Ground Handler with an airline cargo company—an important milestone just months after arriving in Canada.
Back in Nigeria, Ibironke had more than ten years of experience as an administrative assistant and had also successfully operated her own small business selling bottled drinks and water. Determined to continue building her career, she began applying for jobs almost immediately after arriving in Canada.
While she created her own résumé through independent research, Ibironke says Wesley’s Employment Services team played an important role in helping her prepare for interviews and understand employer expectations in Canada.
“The interview preparation and advice I received from Wesley made a real difference,” she says. “They gave me practical tips and helped me feel more confident.”
Ibironke’s story highlights both the determination newcomers bring to Canada and the impact that coordinated support can have in helping them succeed. Through Wesley’s newcomer and employment programs, participants gain the skills, confidence, and connections needed to build successful futures in their new communities.
Every day, Wesley’s Newcomer and Employment Services teams help individuals and families navigate challenges, access resources, and find pathways to employment. Ibironke’s journey is one of many examples of newcomers contributing their talents, experience, and resilience to strengthen our communities.
❤️ Welcome to Canada, Ibironke, and congratulations on your new role. We wish you continued success in this exciting new chapter.
