Message from Board Chair: Wesley is Becoming a Legacy Organization of the United Church
As a standard best practice, Wesley has been undergoing a review of its bylaws and governance structure to ensure it is compliant and up-to-date as a registered not-for-profit charity. All charities need to do this from time to time, and as part of this process, Wesley chose to update its governance structure to align with its current practices.
Therefore, on behalf of the Wesley Board of Directors, I am pleased to announce that after almost 70 years, Wesley will move from being an official Mission of the United Church of Canada to a Legacy Organization.
We will continue to respect our rich United Church history and the compassionate ethics of those who came before. In practical terms, Wesley has been operating quite autonomously for many years, so this will not affect any day-to-day operations.
With this change, we hope to be more inclusive and reflect the rich diversity of the communities we serve, including people of many different faiths or none at all.
Wesley will continue to do the vital community work we have always done with the support of our local churches and community partners for almost 70 years. We will still visit with families and local congregations, accept donations, and generously serve those in need together.
We are planning an Open House event this winter when we can celebrate this milestone together. Please watch your email for an invitation.
In closing, as a long-time member of the United Church, I am delighted to see such progress from Wesley. I will remain personally committed to helping this incredible organization remain strong and ready to serve the most vulnerable in our community.
In the meantime, if you have any questions, please do not hesitate to reach out to me or be in touch with Celeste Weston, Wesley’s Chief Development & Communication Officer, at celeste.weston@wesley.ca or (905) 528-5629 x234.
