Two men sit across from each other at a desk during a Rogers TV interview. One man speaks while the other smiles and listens. A laptop sits on the desk between them in a television studio with red and dark-toned panels in the background.

Wesley on “About Brant with Dave Carrol”

During a recent conversation about refugees and newcomers in Brantford, Wesley’s Rashed Afif shared an important reminder: behind every newcomer is a story of resilience, skill, and hope.

Rashed spoke about the work Wesley does to support refugees and newcomers as they settle into life in Canada. From helping families find housing and register children in school, to accompanying people to medical appointments and connecting them with community services, Wesley’s team works alongside newcomers every step of the way.

Another message from the conversation was about challenging misconceptions and recognizing the many contributions they make to their communities.

“The first thing many newcomers ask is, ‘When can I work?’” Rashed shared with Dave, explaining that many newcomers arrive with incredible experience and skills, including doctors, scientists, business owners, and tradespeople.

He also highlighted the resilience newcomers bring with them and the positive impact they have on communities like Brantford and Hamilton. From opening small businesses to strengthening the local economy and enriching communities with diversity and culture, newcomers help communities grow stronger.

As Rashed says, “Refugees are not a problem, they’re a solution.”
