Six weeks before Christmas, Jennifer* couldn’t afford gifts for her 12-year-old daughter, Allison*. But she was determined to give her what mattered most: a safe home.
The holidays are meant to be a time of warmth, joy, and togetherness. However, for families like Jennifer’s, they can also be a season of overwhelming hardship. Last year, Jennifer and Allison faced challenges that no family should have to endure. After years of living with a partner struggling with alcohol addiction, Jennifer made the courageous decision to leave for her daughter’s safety, well-being, and mental health as she struggled with anxiety and depression.
Jennifer found refuge at Wesley when she had nowhere else to turn. Wesley’s compassionate staff provided not only shelter but also the vital support she and Allison needed. Despite their struggles, Jennifer worked hard to make the holidays special, even decorating their small shelter room to feel more “Christmassy.”
At Wesley, Jennifer discovered more than a roof over her head. She found hope, understanding, and practical help to rebuild her life. When Allison was hospitalized for self-harm, Wesley staff rallied around them, offering Jennifer extra compassion and support. As Allison recovered, a Wesley worker helped Jennifer secure a new job and an affordable apartment.
Today, Jennifer and Allison are thriving. Allison has started high school, made new friends, and loves having a place to call home. Jennifer reflects on her journey with pride, saying, “This has taught me I’m tougher than I thought.” She continues to plan for a brighter future, her resilience and gratitude for the support they received along the way.
Jennifer also reflects back on moments of unexpected joy during their toughest times, like forming a stronger bond with Allison and developing compassion for others facing even greater struggles. “There are so many families going through tough times right now,” Jennifer shares, hoping to inspire others to give back.
