Cathy Scott’s involvement with Wesley started early, through her church’s partnership with the organization. For most of her life, Cathy has donated gifts over Christmas, walked to support Case for Kids in June, and served Sunday meals. When Cathy retired in 2014, she decided to volunteer full-time at the Christmas and Holiday Store. Since then, Cathy has been a vital volunteer team member, helping provide food and new gifts for children, youth, and adults living in poverty.
Seeing obstacles as opportunities, Cathy has overcome many challenges over the years. Covid was a significant obstacle for the organization, as they had to reduce the number of volunteers and close their doors for personal shopping. Additionally, their donations differed from before Covid. Due to the restrictions, they were only allowed a few volunteers to prepare large numbers of hampers for their programs. However, Cathy remained positive and hopeful that they did not have to turn away many families.
Cathy has many personal stories of the impact of Wesley’s work, but one that stands out to her was when Hamilton’s first government-sponsored Syrian refugees came into Wesley’s care. Cathy received an emergency call from a volunteer staff member to pack 100 toys of all ages so the children would have something when they landed. Cathy remembers packing loads of Barbie dolls, winter hats, gloves, and other items. The team was very creative and excited to welcome the new families. The Spectator published a picture of one child holding all those Barbie dolls and wearing their gloves. “It was so touching, and the volunteers’ efforts did not go unnoticed.”
Becoming a vital member of the Wesley team, Cathy helped pack knapsacks for school children, assisted at our annual golf tournament, and is now the Wesley representative for her church. “I am growing every day with Wesley and adding more volunteer work.” Cathy’s need to help others has driven her to get involved in other supports such as Neighbour to Neighbour and the food bank at their church. “My perspective has not changed, I believe it has gotten stronger.”
Cathy’s high energy and passion have allowed her to go above and beyond to promote Welsey, the dignity and respect for our clients, and ultimately instil hope for our community.
Thank you, Cathy
